MUA truth, its OK

I am Med5 at MUA and I am preparing to leave the island on good terms.

It is hard to find truthful info about this place so let me try in a brief statement:

MUA is an OK school. It’s not good but not bad. If I were to do it all over I would apply to MUA AFTER trying to get in to SABA, Ross, St. George, AUA, AUC and maybe even UMHS.

Overall I do still trust MUA. Most of the professors are really nice and will help you even on their days off. They definitely give you all the info you need to succeed and do well on STEP1. however there are some negatives too.

This school has some pros, but there are a lot of negatives too. They have a strict 90% attendance policy and because most of the in class teaching is pretty bad, you seem to waste of LOT of time in school when you could be studying at home. The goal of Caribbean medical schools is to allow you to take and pass USMLE STEP 1. So everyone just reads Kaplan, First Aid, and other texts books anyway. Very little learning will be in class. Most of the professors are nice but some are donkeyes. This school really rewards people who memorize a ton of info and work hard, it does not matter if you are smart or not. Believe me I’ve seen a LOT of idiots complete basic sciences. There is a LOT of cheating, many students have exams and shelfs and the COMPS, which can be frustrating for those who don’t. Most of the students here are all young and immature.

There is a very high attrition rate. This I have come to find is due to a combination of students not spending enough time studying and the school not giving you enough time to study. We started Med1 with 103 students and we are down to 40. Be prepared to work hard.

There are little things this school does that make it frustrating. For instance we used to have 80% attendance but that’s now changed. They also have been telling me “any day now for California” since 2012, so I find it hard to believe things they say. There are very few “good” study areas on campus, most are just old rooms filled with middle school desk/chair things. The dean basically will not talk to you or listen to your suggestions and will not answer your emails. Most of the people who work down here are here because they cannot be in the US (either criminal charges, lost licenses, owe money..). The majority of professors are really nice people though.

The island is not a great place to live, there are very few restaurants, the locals are racist against you, and simple things seem to be difficult for no reason. Its very “island time”. You will probably need to buy or rent a car. You do NOT want to get hurt or sick here, the hospital is a joke.
There is some violence, but not much. I am not afraid living here. Most of the crime you hear about it local vs local. If you live in a nice place and are safety conscious you will be fine here. It’s a safe quiet island and overall I actually enjoy Nevis. There are always two sides to a story.

I focused on the negatives a lot, but overall it is an OK place. I don’t regret coming here and I do like MUA most of the time. I think this school will deliver in terms of clinicals and allwong me to become a physician (which is something that a LOT of foreign schools seem to have issues with).

Make sure you can afford to come here as well, it sounds bad to say, but there are a lot of people who come down here and don't realize the hidden costs (not from MUA but from living in a foreign country) and end up leaving.

Just make sure you are able to “go with the flow”.
