Anyone else preparing to start MUA in Jan? I don't think there is currently a fb group/thread so we can use this to get in touch!

I was recently accepted to MUA and am considering going there. I was hoping to get some feedback about the school from recent graduates that may have just went through the match process. Any pros/cons of MUA? It's comparison to some of the top tier caribbean schools? Any advice on starting?

MUA to get Title IV Funding in May 2015??

Hello!

I have just recently been accepted to MUA for the Jan term and during my interview I asked if MUA was going to get Title IV funding in the near future and the response I got was "it's not going to happen for January but I am confident that it will happen in May. Although I cannot say 100% but I am confident that MUA will have Title IV for the May term."

Also, for those interested in Cali approval the response I got was "It's not a matter of 'if' but a matter of 'when' we will get Ca approval...it may take a year and possibly two years but it is going to happen."

What do you guys think? Do you think MUA really will get Title IV funding in May or have they been saying this for a long time now? I would LOVE to attend MUA but I cannot afford to so without Title IV.

MUA or UMHS??

Hey guys!

I am really stuck in deciding between MUA and UMHS. I would appreciate any help/advice you guys have to offer. My opinion on the two based on my research thus far:

MUA

pros:
*NY/FL approval
*has better chance of getting Title IV funding
*has better chance of getting Cali approval
*been around longer- good residency stats
*follows Saba's curriculum- which is changing starting Jan 2015 (not sure if that is a good thing)

cons:
*have to stay on the island sem 1-5
*clinical department not as organized/strong as UMHS
*new dean/administration not that great

Am I missing anything?? Can anyone (especially current MUA students) list more pros and more cons please!

UMHS:

pros:
*on island sem 1-4
*great sem 5 clinical prep
*good residency stats
*great clinicals with little to no wait time
*owned by Ross family
*great campus/facilities
*good curriculum

cons:
*no NY/FL/CA approval

That's all I can think of for now if anyone else would like to add on to this list I would really appreciate it! I have to make my decision very soon and can't seem to chose between the two. Also, after adding the tuition and fees both schools are very similar in price- MUA is slightly more but doable.

Thank you for your input!

Chances of acceptance for 2016

Hey guys,

I'm currently a junior and finishing up my med school requirements this semester. I'm wondering what are my chances but I'm in a bit of a quirky situation (high gpa/low mcat...really low.) My cumulative average is a 3.504, B/P/CH- 3.64. I currently don't have any clinical experience or research but am driven to gain an experience next semester in a unique position. I actually haven't taken my MCAT yet, but am going to take it in January (one of the last ones before they change to the 2015 format). So I've taken a few practice tests already to gauge my progress and haven't really gotten anywhere...I completed all my requisites this year (Spring, summer (2 semesters), and this fall), so i'm pretty new to the material which is why I think I haven't been up to par where I thought i'd be. My 3 practice test grades were 14,14,17. The 17 I got after my midterm this semester so i'm pretty worried. My VR isn't at all where I thought it would be which is really frustrating, partially because I love the passages, but also the ** section I just get destroyed on, PS is my best section. I've done a lot of research this past year at my options and consider myself a realist- by January, I probably won't be scoring a 30. However, I'm not going to give up by any means. I highly considering MUA because of their continued growth, affordability w/ US loan program, solid output of physicians w/ residency positions, and NY- approval. My phobia about applying to this school is that I won't do well enough on the MCAT, by well enough I mean below 20.

My question- to any better informed students out there, accepted, or pending acceptance, what type of stats did you have to get accepted to MUA?

Surge Protector or UPS?

Hi guys so I have read a couple of posts here but no one really goes in depth about this topic. I will be bringing my laptop down with me to MUA for January 2015 and I recently bought a $20 Belkin surge protector. I read on several posts that surge protectors do not guard against brown-outs (also checked on the manual which confirms this..). However some other posts say that a normal surge protector is fine if you are using a laptop even if it is plugged in during brown-outs. And then there are other people that are saying a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a must and will protect against everything, including brown-outs. To be honest I don't want to spend another 50+ dollars (especially since amazon.ca SUCKS a lot due to 1. limited choice 2. very few items qualify for prime shipping 3. they charge a LOT more vs amazon.com) on a UPS if it is not a necessity. So does anyone have any experience their electronics becoming damaged during brown-outs? Any suggestions/advice are welcome! Thanks all!

I downloaded most of the books required onto my laptop to read. Are there any in particular you would recommend actually buying as hardcopy? Also does anyone have a used dissection kit I can buy? I'm starting med1 this January 2015

Thanks!

MUA - Help!

Hey everybody,

I'm in Toronto, Canada and I'm planning to apply at SMU as well as MUA. I would be starting with premed, and then go on to the 4yr md program.

1) I've heard many pros & cons to carribean med school, how is MUA?
2) How are the exams, professors, step 1 practices?
3) In addition to exams, do you write NBMEs for finals?
4) Can you get most clinicals in NY, and Chicago?
5) Is Residency all just doing well, LORS, interview, OR does school really matter??

I will appreciate all help and feedback!

PLEASE HELP...need to transfer out due to step1 deadline.

Hey! I'm currently an MUA student who is studying for step 1 but due to some personal issues, I won't be able to re-schedule my exam by the school's deadline. Has anyone else been in this situation and had to transfer after passing comp, but before taking step1? If so, what school(s) were willing to accept you straight into clinicals without having to re-take med5/comp/step1course? Also, did you have problems with the transfer process in general? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Exchanging CDN $ in Nevis

Hi everyone! I am starting premed in Nevis in January and I was wondering if I could bring Canadian dollars with me and exchange them in Nevis into ECE/USD. I would rather only exchange the money once instead of exchanging all of my CDN funds into USD, prior to arriving in Nevis, and then having to exchange USD into ECE once I get to Nevis. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.

The mourning of AirAsia flight victims

1. Schedule aircraft originally flew with Singapore's goal is at 7:20 pm on Sunday, December 28, 2014. However, management becomes advance schedule at 05:36, via electronic mail announcements sent to 155 passengers.

2. After takeoff, approximately 30 minutes of flight, manned aircraft pilot and copilot Remi irianto Emmanuel was asked to shift to the left as far as seven miles of track. "Demand it (shift left) has been confirmed and approved by ATC (Air Traffic Control) in Ujung Pandang and known by the ATC Jakarta," said General Manager of ATC Soekarno Hatta, Budi Hendro.

3. Shortly after that, the pilot again asked high-level changes to fly. Originally with a height of 32 thousand feet to 38 thousand feet. Demand it without reason. Though the new plane trip 50 nautical miles. At that time, the plane was in a position of authority limits ATC Makassar Makassar and Jakarta.

What are my chances?

Hey Guys

I was wondering if I could be invited for an interview with a 2.4 cGPA, 2.3sGPA, and 26 (9s on the sciences and 8 on VR) on the MCAT.
I have reasons for the low GPA that I can explain, but have good ECs with 2 years of research and good recommendations.
Graduated in 2014 with a Bachelors in Science from a top public institution.

Thanks
