APARTMENT BLACKLIST: Prudential Lodgings

$

Please let this be a fair warning to all those at MUA who are looking for apartments. Prudential Lodgings is the apartment complex across the main road from the school. It is in a very desirable location due to it's proximity to the school. This was what attracted me to rent at this property originally. I thought that I would save a lot of time and hassel if I lived somewhere close to the school. However, I later learned that this place will be more headache than it is worth.

The original owners were Kevin and Sterling. I had minimal problems with them besides having a random VAT (tax) sprung on me after I've paid a deposit (they originally told me that the rent was inclusive of everything. And they did re-emphasize everything quite a few times too).

The new owner is named Richard. I would be very careful when I'm dealing with this man. He repeatedly reassured the students that after the turnover from Kevin and Sterling, that the original tenents would not be affected. However, he is now making the original tenents sign a new lease with a price increase. In addition, be careful of any extra charges he will sneak in. He will demand that you wire him an entire semester's worth of payment in full. In addition, you will be expected to pay any charges his bank charges him because he has an offshore account. He might tell you that you can pay via other methods, such as money orders, but when you actually to pay via agreed upon method he will suddenly change his mind. Also, beware of their tinkering with your electricity bill. I have heard from previous tenants as well that your electric usage will not add up to what they charge you.

When considering apartments, please ask yourself if you are ready to deal with the headaches that will come with living at this apartment complex. You will be very busy as a medical student and your time is invaluable. There are many good options that are equally close to the school and have much better owners and price options. I wish I had someone to warn me from this place before. Please use caution if you are considering this apartment.

Extended Curriculum?

I know from a previous student at MUA that one of the students actually extended his curriculum to lighten the load a bit and to get a better grasp of the information. What do you think of that approach? I know UMHS has an extended curriculum but for personal reasons I'd rather be at MUA. So let me hear it! Give me your thoughts and comments and be nice....:D

Sorry this has nothing to do with medicine. It's kind of reverse in that it's a rant on the USA and the marketing hype of the western world. I have this pet peeve. You know all these terms you see selling things (mostly in the states) that mean nothing? Can you add any to my list? So that I may increase my contempt?...."Artisan blend...Hand crafted...Signature series...legendary...." So you go to Starbucks and you get a "hand crafted, signature series, artisan blend, legendary mocha latte" and piece of dessert for 8 dollars. What if it was just coffee and bread. Without the adjectives, 2$. With nauseating adjectives, 8$. You see there always will be something to love about the less marketed worlds.

The "I wish I knew that" list of stuff for being a student at MUA.

Welcome to MUA. You've passed the hurdle, you're in medical school, you no longer have to compete with everyone around you…you're in. MUA is a fantastic school and you will enjoy your time down here, but here are some things to keep in mind.

First, the island runs on the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. At present, the exchange is around the 2.7-2.8EC:1US. Using US dollars is possible at all locations but you will get a horrid exchange rate (usually 2.6:1). You don't necessarily have to bring EC down with you, but just remember for budgeting that many of the prices I may quote are in EC unless specified.

You will hear about island time a lot down here. Island time is a way of life here and you'll get used to it. The school does a pretty good job, but in general things move slow down here. If they say 0900h, then it will probably happen before 1000h. All you can do is be on time, relax and wait.

Arriving on the island
There are a few differences between how you and your new classmates will arrive on the island. Your choices are limited, but there is choice between flying into Nevis directly or flying into St Kitts and catching the ferry.

First thing, you will be met at the airport. Be sure to send Charlene all your flight details and they will make sure you are met, picked up, and shuffled all the way back to the school. If you fly into St Kitts you'll need to pay the Ferry which is around $10US so make sure you have a bill in your wallet.

Going through customs is a simple procedure. Make sure you have the paperwork the school sends you saying that you are a student and your name will be added to the various lists. You won't need to show your HIV status or other immunity things at this point (that's later for the island visa at the school) but have it around just in case they wish to see it. Be patient, the lines are long, the computers are slow, but there are multiple international schools on St Kitts and Nevis, so they've done this before.

Here's something I wish I was told: Your luggage will be lost. I'm not saying "might be" I'm not saying "possibly", I'm saying, you and your luggage will not be together when you arrive. If you fly into St Kitts you have a slightly higher chance of having your bag, but assume from this moment forth that you WILL LOSE A BAG. You may get lucky and not lose one, but run under the assumption that some of your bags won't be there when you get there.

If you are flying into Nevis directly, this is because the planes are relatively small and have weight limits. They are unable to sometimes fit all of the bags on the planes so have to leave them behind. You won't be given warnings about this though, you won't find out until you get to Nevis and start looking for your bags. Here is what you do. First, take a deep breath and enjoy the fresh sea air. Second, check in with Charlene and let her know you lost your bag. Third, immediately go and tell the counter people you have lost a bag. Have your tags available, description of the bag and a quick summary of the contents would be useful. Give them, as a local contact, Charlene's phone number. Although you may have your new local cell phone, you do not have the resources (ie Glenroy and the school bus) at your disposal. The bags are not necessarily thrown on the next flight to the island unless there is room, you may have to wait until they do a specific cargo run flight with just bags but it will happen in a few days time so be patient.

If you fly into St Kitts you have a slightly higher chance of having your bag come with you, especially if you are: 1. American, 2. flying directly from Miami and had no layover. Again though, as above, when your bag doesn't show up, the first step is to relax and find Charlene out front and tell her you don't have your bags. Then, head into the DEPARTURE section of the terminal and find the counter representative of the airline you flew in on. As above, have descriptions, numbers and tags available if you can, and give them Charlene's number as a local contact number. Your bags are much more likely to arrive within a day or so because the planes flying into St Kitts are much bigger (obviously) and can thus carry those hundred or so lost bags more easily. As above though, be patient.

Within three days of myself getting to the island Charlene tracked down hundreds of lost bags including one of my own, so she is amazing at her job. Finally, have faith that your bag will get there. Yes it may be lost forever, but pretty much every student will have sympathy for you and help you out if they can.

Of course, after being told all this it goes without saying. It's not hard to throw an extra pair of underwear and socks into your carry on. Throw in a bar of soap and a toothbrush too as it may be 24-48hrs before you can get into town to do any shopping. Medications of course should be brought in a carry on. If you have read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, you should know to always carry a towel, and this is one of those times.

Above all, relax. Yelling at people down here has the opposite effect to what you are hoping to achieve. If they say it will come soon, then it will come soon and there is nothing you can do to speed up the process.

Dorms/Apartments
Once you have your bags it's time to meet your new living arrangements. The bus from the airport will bring you right to the Rawlings dormitory where you will meet the landlord, sign your lease and pay the agreed upon amounts before being brought to your new home.
Here are some things to keep in mind though. When you are packing, remember there is no place nearby that you can pop out and grab something, so pack what you need from start to finish of a meal. Toiletries go without saying, but did anyone say bring a role of toilet paper yet? You better, cause your new place might not have it.
Pillows aren't provided, but a top and bottom sheet are. If you like pillows, bring them down. Airlines are usually okay with you having them as carry on so don't worry about the 'pouffy' volume problem in your check in bags.
The desks in the Potworks dorms are unnaturally high off the ground, you can't fix this, but it's a good heads-up either way. The chairs are not exactly comfortable either. They aren't uncomfortable, but you'll be spending many hours in them. If you aren't a library goer (the school's library has quite good study areas) then you may want to consider bringing a desk chair down or at least some sort of back support to make life a little better. Desk chairs can be bought on the island but are exorbitantly expensive (1500EC for a VERY basic task chair)
Internet will not be hooked up the first day you arrive, and possibly not the second or third. The school has free wi-fi that you can access anytime for a quick email home or Skype call if required. Rawlings internet is set up by the people in the dorm, Potworks you need to have LIME, internet. The basic set up is sufficient for clear Skype calls home and downloading most things.
Bring a power cord that has a built in surge protector. The power in the dorms can go on and off due to failures (there are generators in the dorms, private apartments are hit and miss) and when this happens electronic devices have been known to fry.
An alarm clock that runs only on batteries is important. If the power goes out it can stay out for a long time. If you're asleep and this happens, you might not wake up for class.
Potworks has a small corner store on the roof it that you can access for very basic food-stuffs and reasonable food at a reasonable price. Otherwise, the closest corner store is about 20min walk up the road. There is a local restaurant called Flavour's that is close by, but his hours are variable until school starts up. If you fly in late and don't get there by 1800h, better pack a snack in your carry on.

Living on the island
Now that you hopefully have your bags, have your dorm room set up and all that other good stuff it is time to talk about those little things like, food, water, transportation and alcohol.
Keep in mind again (notice I keep talking about this), island time is something you'll need to get used to and accept. If the store says it opens at 0800h it will probably be open by 0830. If it closes at
Some basic geography first, as people will assume you know where all these places are. Get a map of the island and look at it. MUA is on the top right (NorthEast) part of the island. Charlestown is on the bottom left (SouthWest) and Gingerland is on the bottom right (SouthEast).
Distances vary, but it is about 10-15km from the school to Charlestown. The road is not a straight line, weather and local traffic play a big part, so it can take up to 30min to get into town by car. Gingerland is about 10km away but due to multiple small villages, and twists, turns and hills it can take up to 30min to get there as well
One store in general to keep in mind is called the TDC. It stands for St Kitts and Nevis Trading and Development Company. They own numerous stores and supply depots including car rentals, auto garage, general store, furniture, housewares, building supplies, and the Drink Depot. They may not have the best prices but they probably have it if you want it.
Laundry detergent is something you may not want to skimp on. The local powder looks temptingly cheap, but investing might be worth it until you are used to it.

Food:
Charlestown has a Best Buy supermarket, Ram's supermarket and a relatively new IGA super-store. The Best buy is quite small and leave's something to be desired. Ram's is much bigger and relatively well stocked. They have a house-wares section that is well stocked with cleaning supplies and the like. The IGA is like any larger grocery store at home. Inclusive within it is a pharmacy as well as a good selection of other drug-store like stuff. They have a large and good selection and are quite happy people most of the time to deal with. The prices may be a scootch ($1EC) higher on some things compared with the Gingerland Best Buy, but otherwise are compareable.
The Best Buy in Gingerland is a slightly higher quality grocery store, even if a bit smaller, with good veggie and quality meat selection. The upstairs of this store also has a good selection of housewares, school supplies and some miscellany. The school does run buses to the grocery store a few times a week on a first-come first-served basis (up to 10 or so) so you don't have to panic right away about how you're going to get food.
There are "No-Name" or "house" brands in both stores which are similar to the North America idea of essentially the same product for a lower price.
Make a note though, your diet will change due to selection loss and probably cost as well. Milk is pricey (12EC for a half gallon), vegetables can be bought from various corner stands and but are fairly pricey in store (2EC per apple, 7EC for a broccoli crown, 6EC for a pound of carrots).
Bring a can opener. In fact, bring two, one in carry on and one in checked bags. There is nothing worse than looking at a can of ravioli and not having something to open it with (rocks work, personal knowledge). Again, you can buy one, but it'll cost you.
Bottled water is cheap and readily available at all grocery stores or at the bottle shop in Charlestown. The water from the taps is drinkable, but not advisable for long periods of time unless you are used to it. A 5L jug of spring water will be around $5EC, 1.5L jugs are $2EC. Refills are half that at the bottle shop. Brita filters are usually sufficient for most people in most buildings
The school cafeteria is there for all three meals of the day and is run by the most awesome guy; Livingston. The food is of good quality and relatively good value. Three squares a day will run you about $40-50EC depending on appetite.

Alcohol is available. There is a store just off the main road on the way into Charlestown called the Drink Depot run by the TDC. A 24 of local beer (Carib or Skol, both made on St Kitts and fairly good beer) is about 50EC with a deposit for the bottles. Smirnoff Ice is 92.50EC for a 24 pack. Rum, vodka and other harder drinks are usually slightly over the equivalent duty free price converted (so a $10US bottle of rum will be about 26.50EC).

Clothing and What to Wear:
If you plan to walk to school often remember that this is the tropics. It is hot, humid and when it rains…it rains. Umbrella's are important, a good raincoat is as well. We are students though and you don't have to dress up in class. Med 1's require scrubs for the gross anatomy lab though. Comfort is important. You sit for many hours a day in the same room and don't want to be thinking how uncomfortable your shirt is when the teacher is telling you what is going to be on the exam.
You are required for Med-1 to have some professional wear (Appropriate business wear) for your FCM class (Foundations of Clinical Medicine) as well as a waist-length lab coat.
Input from the women in our class say that bringing casual clothes are good, but that bringing three or four party outfits is a must. There are small social get togethers and large Block Parties (more on that later) where you may want to look extra-good.

Restaurants:
There are many restaurants for every taste and every wallet. Closer to the school is Flavour's, a favourite for the Potworks gang, which is good food and reasonable service in a good atmosphere. Indian Summer is a slightly higher cost but good quality indian restaurant. Coconut grove is a very pricey but very good restaurant. The Yachtsman Club is reasonable food at a slightly higher price but the service is great they also do a fish fry on Friday's that is all you can eat fish and chips. There are others, ask around when you get here as most of the students know their favourites off by heart.

Vehicle Transportation:
You can get by without a car on the island, it is difficult but do-able. Vehicles are expensive, and be prepared to take a hit on quality. A reasonable shape 10 year old car will be over $5000US. Rental cars can be had for $300-600 a month depending on quality and reliability. Jeeps or 4x4's are not necessary but can be nice on some of the roads, you'll need to slow down in places with a car and choose your lines. If you plan to import a car check into import laws and taxes. There is an environmental levy on any car over 5years old of $5000EC and there is VAT, duty and other taxes added. A $1000US car can easily cost $7000US by the time taxes and shipping costs are taken into account. There are sort of ways around it and you can find a broker down here to explain some of them, but it will be pricey.
"H-buses" are local mini-buses operated by locals that have green license plates starting with "H-" They will cost about $5EC from the school to Charlestown (or the same in reverse from Charlestown to Dorms). Note there is no schedule, they come along when they come along going into town. Once in Charlestown (their hub) you can get one going either clockwise or counterclockwise around the island. Let the driver know where you want to be dropped off (they know the school, don't worry) and just sit back and relax. It can take anywhere from 45min to 90min to get back from Charlestown depending on the stops and detours taken.
If you do decide to drive yourself a drivers license is required and costs $125EC for the year if you have a valid drivers license from home. Takes about five minutes to get in the police station. Remember, we drive on the left and there aren't necessarily places to spin off the road if you go to fast. You can choose ocean or rock wall on most of the roads. If you're lucky there is a tree to stop you. The lesson? Slow down, island time remember?

Parties:
The important part is school right? Well, yes, but lets be realistic.
Your term down here is divided into "blocks" of either 3 (Med) or 2 (pre-med) week chunks. You are tested on the material and then start the next section. At the end of these Blocks is a block party. A get together of supreme awesomeness run by one of the med classes.
Parties are fun, but remember that everyone knows you, and that includes the locals. This is their island, we are guests so make sure this is kept in mind the entire time down here. You can have fun, but be good.

Shipping Versus Packing:
Remember how I said your bags might not show up right away? Well, they will show up eventually, and this leads to a constant questions: Do I ship or do I bring with me?
Pros and cons of both exist. If you ship, the boxes will be opened probably before they leave the US and are searched, then again in St Kitts and then again in Nevis. At each location the packing order and sealing of the boxes degrades slightly. Will everything be broken? No. Will some of it? Yep.
Also, it is VERY pricey to ship down here and can take many weeks to months to get here. Canada post has been known to not know where Nevis is, FedEx has sent its stuff to Japan (there is a "Nevis" there too), and UPS sometimes can't find it in their computer. When you do finally find the island on the computer it will cost around $250US for a 10lb box to be "guarantee 4 day" shipped.
So, what do you do? Well, American Airlines charges $70US for an extra bag that can weigh up to 50lbs. It may not be there the first day you arrive, but it'll show up in that first week. One student brought seven bags, excessive? Well, he has a coffee maker, toaster oven, skillet, two burner hot plate, full cutlery and cooking set and dish rack. I survive…but I wished I didn't have to.

There it is, the long survival guide to getting to this island. It's a wonderful place, MUA is a great school and you are going to like it here. Key things to recall?
-Relax, it's island time
-You won't have selection, but you can get what you want if you pay for it
-Relax.

There is a new apartment complex being constructed right across the street from MUA, due to be ready for use for the May 2013 semester. You are literally a roads width away from the schools property. Rent will be approx 850$ US per month. All furniture will be brand new. The units are singles only. The vehicle access will be a common vehicle shared by all tenants, with permission/keys given to you by the landlord (In other words, you reserve it in advance and he will deliver the car for you to use). I am not the landlord, I am a student who lived in his old complex and assisting him fill his new units. If you are interested, please leave your email here and I will put you in contact with him. (I would have left an email address here for you to send a message too, unfortunately the forum will not allow me to leave an address here unless I have a certain number of posts).

Note:The school 'requires' you to live in the dorms your first semester, but this is a complete lie. You are free to live anywhere you wish, provided you tell the school in advance. Avoid the nightmarish stories of living in Rawlins/Potworks dormitories and get an incredible apartment right next to school!

I applied for Basic Sciences and I am being interviewed for PreMed

I really need some genuine advice from the wise and experienced ... As you can see from the subject line, I applied to MUA for it's basic sciences and I was sent an email to interview for PreMed as they feel it would be more appropriate for me... "The Admissions Committee feels that you are only competitive for the PreMed Program"

Just to give you some background, I am a 4th year nursing student at one of the top 5 universities in Canada. I have completed all the med school pre-reqs as summer school courses and yes my marks in those are not stellar - they are in the 60-69% range, consistently for all these pre-reqs. I had to repeat Organic Chemistry as well but did better the second time.I admit I'm not perfect and my science gpa could be a lot higher epecially seeing the competition for medical school but trust me... I am a very hardworking individual and did all this even while working and looking after my disabled mom.

Either way, my overall medical school application was decent, my current gpa is a 3.0, with tons of extra curricular activities, work experience, tonnes of clinical experience (as I'm coming from a nursing background), great LOR's and moreover I've taken courses in Microbiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Physiology etc.

I was really taken aback and almost started tearing up when I saw their email .... they did not think I'm suitable for the basic sciences program just based on the pre-req courses that unfortunately I have struggled with in my three summers of undergrad...what about everything else I've taken and done to get me where I am.

I am afraid now that if I have reached this stage in the admissions process that I wont even stand a chance for any of the other med schools like saba, smu, st.james etc.

Anyone with some suggestions or words of guidance, plz share...

I am open to honest feedback and yes plz be nice, constructive feedback will be well received.

How early will you be going to the island to settle down?

online bachelors with my medical degree?

Hello everyone. I completed highschool and two years/60 credits of community college in the United States. I then applied to a lower tier caribbean medical school and have completed 2 years of basic sciences. I am currently studying for my USMLE Step 1 exam. After my Step 1 exam, I will complete my 3rd and 4th year in the United States, doing rotations at my school affiliated hospitals.

My question is, along with 3rd-4th year, would it be wise to finish my bachelors degree? If so, should I complete it with a large public university(that offer online courses like nyu, uchicago, ucla, uflorida), or would that be pointless?

If not, what about online universities like (walden, davenport, u.phoenix, etc). Are they even legit? Will this even be beneficial, "a guy with an md degree and a bachelors degree in business/health/management for example"?

Please note I already have 60 undergrad credits. Thanks!
